Adults fly for a very short period from the end of June to the beginning of July.
I was there to meet a man about a butterfly – the large blue butterfly, to be precise. When I was there two years ago, it wasn’t for a hike.
The large blue is the biggest blue butterfly. The Large Blue is the largest and rarest butterfly in the UK. And threading its way through the Golden Valley is the Golden Valley walk: a short five-mile circuit that takes in some truly stunning landscape.
It has always been rare in the UK, but declined dramatically during the 20th century and became extinct in 1979.
Reintroduced in the early 1980s, small populations are now surviving in the south of England. Photographs by Martin Warren.
The underside of their wings are tawny with black spots and a blush of pale blue.
If you're lucky enough to spot one, you'll recognise it by its jewel-like blue wings.
