The Pacific Sailfin Tang will need at least a 125 gallon tank (473 liters), preferably larger, to allow for adequate swimming space and to accommodate for their potential adult size of 15 inches (39 cm). Though they can get along with other tank mates quite peacefully, they are territorial in nature towards similar looking fish. The Pacific Sailfin Tang is another member of the surgeonfishes and grows to be one of the largest of the commonly available tangs.

Its body morphs change depending on its age: the juveniles are solitary and tend to spend time hiding among live rockwork. With its vertical stripes of yellow and black along the ability to aggressively extend its dorsal and pectoral fins, the Sailfin Tang is as territorial as it is beautiful. The Desjardini Sailfin Tang, also known as the Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang, Desjardin's Sailfin Tang, or Red Sea Sailfin Tang, is dark to very light gray in color with light freckles on the nose and yellow freckles on the abdomen.
